The Acid Test: Defending Composite Integrity against Micro-Corrosion in Acidifying Oceans

As ocean acidification increases, the pH level of the sea surface is dropping. While this is an ecological disaster, it is also a micro-corrosion challenge for composite maritime structures. At RockerWave, our material science focuses on the 15-year lifecycle. We are defending the integrity of your RockerWave Master and Legacy series boards against this invisible, long-term degradation.

Resin Matrix vs. Micro-Etching

Standard marine resins are vulnerable to micro-etching in low-pH environments. Over time, this micro-roughness increases surface friction and, more critically, provides paths for moisture penetration into the carbon core. We utilize an Acid-Resistant Polycarbonate Resin Matrix. This barrier-level material is engineered to maintain its microscopic smoothness even after years of exposure, ensuring that your board’s wetted surface area remains low and its structural core remains dry.

Post-Cure Cross-Linking Density

The final defense is in the molecular geometry. By maximizing the Cross-Linking Density during our high-temperature post-cure process, we create a matrix that is too dense for acidic H+ ions to effectively attack. This not only preserves the aesthetic of the carbon weave but also ensures that the board’s foundational modulus of elasticity—its rigid "pop"—is preserved for the entire life of the craft.
